Early 1928
With their letter of January 27, 1928, Zinoviev and Kamenev completed their path of betrayal. At the 15th Congress they capitulated to the Thermidorian Stalinist apparatus, abandoning not only active struggle against it and the advocacy and defense of their views before the Party, but even their views themselves. This was a direct desertion from the front of the struggle for the proletarian dictatorship against the degenerated apparatus of the party and the state. Now they are taking the next step, from desertion to treason. They go over to the side of the apparatus, i.e., to the side of the Thermidorians against the revolutionary part of the party. The behavior of these two deserters proves once again the correctness of Ilyich, who wrote in his testament that the October 1917 mistake on the part of Zinoviev and Kamenev was not accidental. But in October 1917 they had deserted from the front, being afraid of taking up arms on behalf of the working class. Now they have deserted for fear of losing the power that the petty bourgeoisie and the bureaucracy had mastered.
Like all traitors, Zinoviev and Kamenev adorn their treachery with good words and noble motives. They claim they do not want a second party and therefore capitulate to the All-Union Communist Party of Bolsheviks. These gentlemen “forgot” to tell the workers that the second party — the party of the Thermidorians and the fascists — is being created by the Stalinist apparatus, which keeps the old Bolshevik guard in prisons and in exile. The Opposition has no aims other than the restoration of the old Bolshevik Party. Messrs. Zinoviev and Kamenev “forgot” to tell the workers that the 15th Congress — whose participants were handpicked up by the GPU — with the help of hooligans and whistlers, not only did not express the will of the Party, its proletarian wing, but was an open and brazen mockery of the Party. They do not say that this union meeting of Stalinist thugs guillotined the opposition and thereby completed the state coup, throwing wide open the doors to the counter-revolution.
Zinoviev and Kamenev refuse to continue the opposition struggle, allegedly in order to have the opportunity within the party to defend their views. But they have given up these views. They have given up their platform. They assumed a duty to carry out the decisions of the Congress, which declared the platform to be Menshevik, although the Mensheviks themselves welcome the 15th Congress and the Stalinist policy. What are they going to defend within the party? Obviously, not the views of the opposition, but those of the apparatus.
Already in their treacherous letter they have embarked on this path. Already in their letter they are using the vile legend of “Trotskyism”, which was invented by them to deceive the party for factional purposes. Already in the letter they defend the party apparatus against accusations of rebirth and Thermidorianism, while they have the audacity to portray the decision of the Congress as a “turn to the left” in the face of the disgraceful collective agreement campaign, the economic catastrophe, the failure of the grain procurement, the capitulation to the kulak, that characterize the present stage of the Chekist policy.
One must lose the last drop of revolutionary conscience and any sense of responsibility for one’s yesterday’s words and actions, to be able to deceive the workers, the class and the party so openly, to mock so hard the self-sacrificing proletarian oppositionists who, in spite of hunger, exile, prison, continue the heroic struggle against Thermidorianism and fascism, which is concentrated in the apparatus of the party and the state.
Another betrayal of Zinoviev and Kamenev turns them this time finally into political corpses from the point of view of the opposition, i.e., the Bolshevik Leninist movement in the country and in the party. One can, of course, live—and even live well—after political death. For the sake of a good life, one sometimes deliberately ends their life by political suicide. But for the opposition Bolshevik movement these people are in any case lost for good. So much the better. It will cleanse the opposition ranks of rotten elements and dubious fellow travelers. It will help in the selection of fighters. Let the traitors go over to the side of fascism. The revolutionary proletarian part of the party, the revolutionary part of the working class will move in greater and greater masses under the Opposition’s battle banner, to the side of Bolshevism. Victory will be ours.

Товарищи!
На рабочих СССР обрушились новые репрессии, на фабриках и заводах возобновились массовые аресты. Число арестованных революционеров по СССР уже теперь является рекордным по сравнению с любым фашистским государством. ГПУ и ЦК, сбросившие с себя узду революции, победно шагают впереди европейской реакции. Для пролетарской оппозиции в этом нет неожиданности. Еще в декабре 27 г. «группа 15» предупреждала, что репрессии неизбежны, если пролетариат не сумеет организовать отпора преступной политике ЦК. За истекший год нажим на рабочих усилился, стал наглым и откровенным. В обстановке растущей дороговизны повышаются нормы, снижаются расценки, а 8-й съезд профсоюзов провозглашает задачей дня новое повышение производительности труда. Куда идут накопления, добытые хищнической, варварской эксплуатацией труда? Они пожираются паразитическим аппаратом, чиновничеством. Чиновник – враг рабочего, чиновник – у власти. Каждому рабочему должно быть ясно, что ДИКТАТУРЫ ПРОЛЕТАРИАТА УЖЕ НЕТ. НЕТ БОЛЬШЕ ВЛАСТИ РАБОЧЕГО КЛАССА. Ренегаты и предатели задушили революцию, а теперь пытаются задушить рабочий класс, превратив его в слепое и послушное орудие своих предательских целей. НО ЭТОМУ НЕ БЫВАТЬ. Не для того русский пролетариат десятилетиями боролся с царизмом и буржуазией, не для того делал революцию, строил свое государство, чтобы на 12 году после Октября пасть жертвой обмана и провокации вчерашних революционеров. На провокацию правительства пролетариат ответит борьбой. Власть Рыкова-Сталина, тупая и бездарная, довела страну до банкротства. Нет хлеба, нет товаров. Недовольство растет. Недоволен рабочий, недоволен крестьянин. Где выход? Новый нажим на мускулы рабочих. На кого опереться? Правительство, запутавшееся и растерянное, ищет смыка с кулаком, но кулак требует дешевых товаров из-за границы, и вот готовится отмена монополии внешней торговли. Подготовляется капитуляция перед мировой буржуазией. Любые уступки империализму, лишь бы сохранить власть. Так рассуждают предатели из ЦК и Совнаркома. Никогда, отвечает рабочий, который знает, что он один будет расплачиваться за кабалу.
Арестами и ссылками правительство пытается ослабить растущее сопротивление пролетариата. От исхода этой борьбы будет зависеть, удасться ли пролетариату отстоять свои права, или власть в союзе с кулаком по приказу мировой буржуазии доведет его до положения китайского кули.
Что должен делать рабочий? СТРОИТЬ СВОЮ РЕВОЛЮЦИОННУЮ ПАРТИЮ. ВКП умерла, ВКП труп. Только изгнанная из ВКП оппозиция остается верна революции. Через все испытания, через суровые бури грядущего дня знамя большевизма, знамя пролетариата она понесет навстречу победам.
РАБОЧИЕ, ОРГАНИЗУЙТЕСЬ ВОКРУГ ПРОЛЕТАРСКОЙ ОППОЗИЦИИ! Оппозиция загнана в подполье. Но репрессии и преследования врагов, прикрывающихся именем коммунизма, не сломят ее силы. Голос революции из подполья будет звучать так же мощно, как звучал он в годы царизма.
Товарищи рабочие, оппозиция завет вас на борьбу с бюрократическим режимом.
