Call for proposals: Socialism in Our Time, presented by Historical Materialism

April 13-14, 2019 • New York City

Socialism is on the march. How can a new generation turn this moment, radically open and turbulent, into a permanent feature of the North American social landscape?

On April 13-14, 2019, the Socialism in Our Time conference will explore this question. It will provide an emerging movement the space to ask new questions, identify key challenges, develop our understanding of capitalism, and consider struggles to build an alternative.

Over two days in New York City, Socialism in Our Time will bring together hundreds of scholars, seasoned activists, labor organizers, union members, and journalists, as well as many who are new to or curious about socialism. Both new and veteran leftists will connect, discuss, and debate at dozens of panels and workshops.

We invite you to submit a proposal for Socialism in Our Time at socialisminourtime.com/proposals. The conference will be organized loosely along three themes:

Capitalism and Crisis

An entire generation has grown up with low wages, unaffordable housing and health care, police brutality, barbaric immigration enforcement, unending US wars, the destruction of our planet, and relentless attacks on all oppressed people.

We welcome contributions that address UNDERSTANDING CAPITALISM; CAPITALISM AND OPPRESSION; IMPERIALISM AND COLONIALISM; THE ECOLOGICAL CRISIS; and CRITICAL/ANTI-CAPITALIST PHILOSOPHIES

History

To prepare for the fights ahead, we have to study the struggles that came before us.

We welcome contributions that address HISTORY OF SOCIAL STRUGGLES AND MOVEMENTS; HISTORY OF THE LABOR AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS; HISTORY OF ORGANIZATIONS AND PARTIES; LEGACIES OF PARTICULAR THINKERS AND ACTIVISTS

Resistance Today; Mapping the Future

Multiple struggles have exploded in the US for the first time in decades. Millions have flooded the streets against right wing populism. #MeToo has called the pervasive sexism in society into question. Thirteen million people voted for socialist Bernie Sanders for President. Insurgent socialist candidacies continue to upend longstanding politicians, and socialist organizations are growing. Where do we go from here?

We welcome contributions that address ORGANIZING LABOR TODAY; SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND GRASSROOTS RESISTANCE; CULTURE OF RESISTANCE; INTERSECTING STRUGGLES AND PERSPECTIVES, SOCIALIST STRATEGIES FOR ELECTIONS; BUILDING POWER; INTERNATIONAL SOLIDARITY.

Socialism in Our Time is presented by Historical Materialism and many others. More details to come in January 2019, at socialisminourtime.com.
