Jair Bolsonaro’s election as Brazilian president showed the rise of the far right going global. We are very fortunate to host an exchange on the political meaning of the collapse of the Workers Party administration and the Bolsonaro presidency by two leading Brazilian left-wing thinkers. Virginia Fontes is Professor of Social History at the Universidade Federal Fluminense, Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, and author of, among other works, O Brasil e o capital-imperialismo. Teoria e história (2010). Alfredo Saad-Filho is Professor of Political Economy at the School of Oriental and African Studies University of London. His most recent book (with Lecio Morais) is Brazil: Neoliberalism and Democracy (2017).
