First North American Conference

April 24-26, 2008, Toronto

After ten years of publication and four years of hosting an annual conference in London, England, we are delighted that Historical Materialism: A Journal of Critical Marxist Research is now organizing a conference in North America. In a short timeHistorical Materialism has emerged as the premier English language site of critical research within the traditions associated with the materialist conception of history.

Over 150 critical scholars – among them Rosemary Hennessy, Giovanni Arrighi, Aijaz Ahmad, Johanna Brenner, Bertell Ollman, Barbara Epstein, Leo Panitch, Joel Kovel, Isabella Baker, Bryan Palmer, Anna Agathangelou, and Peter Linebaugh – will assemble for this exciting event.

To be held April 24-26, 2008, the conference is sponsored by the Department of Political Science and Founders College at York University, Toronto.

The conference is also co-sponsored by the Socialist Register, along with York’s graduate programs in Women’s Studies and in Political Science.

The organizers would like to thank Mauro Buccheri, Master of Founders College, for his ongoing and steadfast support of this initiative. We also wish to thank Professors Bryan Palmer and Leo Panitch for the generous conference support they have provided through their respective Canada Research Chairs
